(be)longing: cynefin / hiraeth is a poetic exploration of Welsh identity, place and myth. Moving between personal reflection and cultural enquiry, the chapbook traces the tension between cynefin - a deep sense of belonging to land and community - and hiraeth - a longing for home that may be distant, lost or imagined. Written from the perspective of a Welsh writer living in England, the poems weave together landscape, language, folklore and memory to consider what it means to be Welsh in the modern world. Drawing on the rich mythic traditions of Cymru while questioning and recontextualising them, (be)longing invites readers into an intimate conversation about heritage, displacement and the enduring power of story to shape our relationship with place.

This is an intimate invitation for those grieving shifts and turns while still witnessing what remains—there, but not quite as it was. This is a dreaming-into how my brother's life can also be a collective story, seeking permission and understanding while longing to build it. 

In my twenties, I witnessed my brother’s life take a different route, while the way we experienced seasons shifted and our childhood forest disappeared. These noticings seek community on the page and hope to extend empathy beyond it, offering radical permission to honour both loss and hope, to inhabit the both/and while orienting within nature’s cycles. It asks what it means to be kin with inner and outer landscapes amid ambiguous loss, and how to relearn what it means to be alive and a sister in this current world. The chapbook became a letter that could not be sent— an invitation to hold disappearance and devotion, devastation and care, all at once.

The landscape makes time-travellers of us all. Ritual landscapes, especially, carry a weight of prolonged significance that we are hardwired to notice. Silvestris explores the intersection between the wild, the ancient, and the made, as it unearths the histories and mythologies that lie beneath the topsoil at one such site. Centred around a prehistoric ritual complex at Uley in rural Gloucestershire, this debut collection captures moments of the site’s history from the Carboniferous to the Anthropocene, considering the relationship between humanity, the stasis of place, and the movement of time. It re-animates the finds uncovered from the multiple excavations across the complex, imagining the voices and the stories of the people who lived, worked, and worshipped here.
